Rajma (Kidney Beans) Curry




The Kidney beans is also known as chilly beans or red beans. In hindi its called Rajma. It is dark red in colour and it looks similar to a kidney. Rajma is popular in Northern India.

Ingredients

Rajma (Kidney Beans) ~ 1 cup
Onion ~ 1 No (Big sized)
Green chillies ~ 4 Nos (Split length-wise)
Ginger-garlic paste ~ 1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder ~ 2 tbsp
Red chilly powder ~ 3/4 tbsp
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Garam masala ~ 1/2 tsp
Tomato ~ 1 No (Big )
Oil ~ 2 tbsp
Salt to taste
Mustard seeds
Curry leaves ~ 4 leaves
Chopped Coriander leaves ~ 1/4 cup
Milk/ Coconut milk ~ 1 - 1 1/2cup 

Method
  • Wash and soak kidney beans in water over night or for at least 7-8 hours.Then pressure cook kidney beans by adding 3 cups of water, medium sized chopped onions, chopped green chillies, ginger garlic paste and salt, till it becomes soft. ( I usually cook till 6-7 whistles.) 

  • Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.When the mustard seeds pop up, add curry leaves and then lower the flame and add coriander powder, chilly powder, turmeric powder, garam masala , pepper powder and fry till the raw smell of masala goes.

  • Then add chopped tomato with little salt and fry for some more time.When the tomatoes are nicely done, add cooked rajma and boil till the gravy thickens.Then add milk/coconut milk and keep it in medium-low flame for another 5 -10 minutes and remove from the flame.Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve with chapathi or rice.
