The Kidney beans is also known as chilly beans or red beans. In hindi its called Rajma. It is dark red in colour and it looks similar to a kidney. Rajma is popular in Northern India.
Rajma (Kidney Beans) ~ 1 cup
Onion ~ 1 No (Big sized)
Green chillies ~ 4 Nos (Split length-wise)
Ginger-garlic paste ~ 1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder ~ 2 tbsp
Red chilly powder ~ 3/4 tbsp
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Garam masala ~ 1/2 tsp
Tomato ~ 1 No (Big )
Oil ~ 2 tbsp
Salt to taste

Curry leaves ~ 4 leaves
Chopped Coriander leaves ~ 1/4 cup
Milk/ Coconut milk ~ 1 - 1 1/2cup
- Wash and soak kidney beans in water over night or for at least 7-8 hours.Then pressure cook kidney beans by adding 3 cups of water, medium sized chopped onions, chopped green chillies, ginger garlic paste and salt, till it becomes soft. ( I usually cook till 6-7 whistles.)
- Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.When the mustard seeds pop up, add curry leaves and then lower the flame and add coriander powder, chilly powder, turmeric powder, garam masala , pepper powder and fry till the raw smell of masala goes.
- Then add chopped tomato with little salt and fry for some more time.When the tomatoes are nicely done, add cooked rajma and boil till the gravy thickens.Then add milk/coconut milk and keep it in medium-low flame for another 5 -10 minutes and remove from the flame.Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
