Cabbage Thoran / Cabbage Stir Fry with Coconut

Today I am sharing the recipe of Cabbage Thoran / Cabbage stir fry with coconut.

Serves ~ 2-3 Adults


Chopped cabbage ~  3 Cup 
Turmeric powder ~ 3/4 tsp
Cumin seeds (Jeerakam) ~ 1/2 tsp
Dry red chillies ~ 4 Nos
Curry leaves ~ 1 stem
Mustard seeds (Kaduku)
Urad Dal (Uzhunnu) ~ 2 1/2 tbsp
Grated coconut ~ 3/4 cup
Green chillies ~ 4-5 Nos
Shallots (Kochu Ulli) ~ 3 Nos
Garlic ~ 3 cloves
Oil ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Salt to taste.

  • First wash and chop cabbage to small pieces. Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start to crackle, add dry red chillies, curry leaves and urad dal and fry till urad dal becomes slightly brown in color. 
  • Then add chopped onions and saute till onions become translucent and then add chopped cabbage along with enough salt and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. Cover the pan and cook for about 15 minutes in low flame. Do stir in between.
  • Meanwhile grind coarsely grated coconut, green chillies, cumin seeds, shallots and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. When  the cabbage is almost cooked, add ground coconut mixture and mix it well.
    • Then cook uncovered for another 5-10 minutes and remove from the flame.

    Enjoy with rice.
