Serves ~ 2-3 adults
Ingredients
Basmati rice / White long grain rice ~ 1 cup
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder ~ 3/4 tsp - 1 tsp
Asafoetida powder / Kayam podi ~ 2 pinch
Tomatoes ~ 3 nos ( Large sized )
Chana dal / Kadala parippu ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Urad dal / Uzhunnu ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Onions ~ 1 no
Chopped ginger and garlic ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Green chillies ~ 3 nos
Curry leaves ~ 1 stem
Dry red chillies ~ 3 nos
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam ~ 1/2 tsp
Chopped coriander leaves / Malliyela ~ 1/2 cup
Chopped coriander leaves / Malliyela ~ 1/2 cup
Oil / Ghee
Salt to taste
Method
- First wash and cook rice by adding enough water and salt and keep it aside. Then heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and when it start to splutter, add dry red chillies followed by curry leaves, chopped green chillies and chana dal and fry till the chana dal tuns light brown in color. Then add urad dal and when it turns light brown in color, add chopped onions, garlic and ginger and saute till onions become transparent.
- Then lower the flame and add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and asafoetida powder and fry for less than a minute. Next add chopped tomatoes along with little salt and fry till the tomatoes are nicely cooked and mashed. Finally add cooked rice followed by chopped coriander leaves and mix it nicely. Remove from the flame after 2-3 minutes.
