Today I am sharing the recipe of Nadan beef curry / Kerala style beef curry with coconut milk. This beef curry is very easy to prepare and is a great accompaniment for Appam.
Beef ~ 1/2 kg ( Chop to small cubes )
Potatoes ~ 2 medium sized ( Chopped to medium sized cubes )
Onions ~ 2 medium sized
Green chillies ~ 5-6 nos ( Split length-wise )
Ginger-garlic paste ~ 2 tsp
Coriander powder ~ 3 tsp
Red chilly powder ~ 1 1/2 tsp
Home made garam masala ~ 1 tsp ( Grind 1 small cinnamon stick, 3 cardamom, 3 cloves , 1 small star anise )
Black pepper powder ~ 1 tsp
Fennel powder / Perinjeerakam podi ~ 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder ~ 3/4 tsp
Thin coconut milk ~ 1 cup
Thick coconut milk ~ 1/2 cup
Curry leaves ~ 2-3 stems
Vinegar / Lemon juice ~ 1 tbsp
Salt to taste
Oil ~ 4-5 tbsp
- First marinate the beef pieces with vinegar, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and enough salt and keep it aside for about 15-30 minutes.
- Next heat oil in a pressure cooker or in a pan and add mustard seeds, when it crackles, add ginger-garlic paste, chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves and saute till onions become soft. Then lower the flame and add coriander powder, red chilly powder, garam masala, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, black pepper powder and fennel powder and fry till the raw smell of the powders go.
- When the powders become slightly dark in color, add chopped potatoes and marinated beef and mix it nicely.Next add 1 cup of thin coconut milk along with enough salt and pressure cook in a medium flame for about 3 whistles and switch off the stove.
- When the pressure is fully released, remove the lid and cook in a low flame till the gravy reaches your desired consistency and then add 1/2 cup thick coconut milk along with some curry leaves and remove from the flame after 5-10 minutes.
Enjoy with Appam.
