Nadan beef curry

Today I am sharing the recipe of Nadan beef curry / Kerala style beef curry with coconut milk. This beef curry is very easy to prepare and is a great accompaniment for Appam.

Ingredients

Beef ~ 1/2 kg ( Chop to small cubes )
Potatoes ~ 2 medium sized ( Chopped to medium sized cubes )
Onions ~ 2 medium sized
Green chillies ~ 5-6 nos ( Split length-wise )
Ginger-garlic paste ~ 2 tsp
Coriander powder ~ 3 tsp
Red chilly powder ~ 1 1/2 tsp
Home made garam masala ~ 1 tsp ( Grind 1 small cinnamon stick, 3 cardamom, 3 cloves , 1 small star anise )
Black pepper powder ~ 1 tsp
Fennel powder / Perinjeerakam podi ~ 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder ~ 3/4 tsp
Thin coconut milk ~ 1 cup
Thick coconut milk ~ 1/2 cup
Curry leaves ~ 2-3 stems
Vinegar / Lemon juice ~ 1 tbsp
Salt to taste
Oil ~ 4-5 tbsp

Method
  • First marinate the beef pieces with vinegar, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and enough salt and keep it aside for about 15-30 minutes.
  • Next heat oil in a pressure cooker or in a pan and add mustard seeds, when it crackles, add ginger-garlic paste, chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves and saute till onions become soft. Then lower the flame and add coriander powder, red chilly powder, garam masala, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, black pepper powder and fennel powder and fry till the raw smell of the powders go.
  • When the powders become slightly dark in color, add chopped potatoes and marinated beef and mix it nicely.Next add 1 cup of thin coconut milk along with enough salt and pressure cook in a medium flame for about 3 whistles and switch off the stove.
  • When the pressure is fully released, remove the lid and cook in a low flame till the gravy reaches your desired consistency and then add 1/2 cup thick coconut milk along with some curry leaves and remove from the flame after 5-10 minutes.
Enjoy with Appam.

Cheers!!

Hi Jisha, how come this beef curry is more on the brown side and the receipe from your aunt's for the hotel is really red. you use the same amount of chilly powder tbsp and corriander powder 3tbsp on both

@ Anon - Nadan beef curry is prepared by adding coconut milk, that's why it doesn't look "Red"....:)
