First of all wishing you all a Happy and prosperous Vishu!!..Today I am sharing the recipe of a Dal curry / Parippu curry. This is not the usual Kerala style parippu curry with grated coconut, but in this recipe we can use almost all types of dal /parippu and we don't use coconut here. This is very easy to prepare and this dal curry goes well with chapati.
Serves ~ 2 adults
Ingredients
Dal / Parippu ~ 3/4 cup
( I used 1/4 cup masoor dal, 1/4 cup toor dal / thuvara parippu , 1/4 cup moong dal / cheru payar parippu. You can even use chana dal / kadala parippu if you don't have any one of the above mentioned dals )
Onions ~ 1 No ( Chopped to medium sized pieces )
Green chillies ~ 5-6 Nos ( Split length-wise )
Garlic ~ 4-5 cloves ( Make medium sized slices )
Red chilly powder ~ 1 tsp
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Garam masala ~ 2-3 pinches
Tomato ~ 1 No
Curd / Yogurt ~ 3 tbsp
Chopped coriander leaves ~ 1/4 cup
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam ~ 1/2 tsp
Oil ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Dry red chillies ~ 3 Nos
Salt to taste
Method
- First wash and pressure cook the parippu / dal by adding 3 cups of water, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, garlic slices, green chillies and enough salt till 2 whistles.
- Then heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and dry red chillies and when its pops up, add chopped onions and saute till onions become soft. Then lower the flame and add red chilly powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and fry for less than a minute.
- Then add chopped tomato and fry for sometime. After that add cooked dal and boil till the gravy thickens. When it reaches the desired consistency, reduce the flame and add garam masala, curd and chopped coriander leaves. Mix it nicely and remove from the flame after 3-4 minutes.
Enjoy with Chapathi.
Cheers!!

Hello jisha
Very nice recipe..pics are really good.
One doubt whats the purpose of adding curd into the mixture.
Thanks
Meenu
I just tried your dal recipe and it was absolutely amazing- the real north indian flavour. thnk u so much for sharing
this really great
i had a question what is the purpose of adding curd? can that be left of ?
@ Meenu & Jesfin - I personally feel that, adding curd/yogurt will make the dal a bit creamy and thick, but I can assure that this dal curry tastes wonderful even with or without adding curd...so its completely up to you whether you want to add it or not...:))
@ Anonymous - Thank you so muchh...very happy to hear that.....:)))
