Kerala drumstick curry

Today I am sharing the recipe of Kerala drumstick curry / Murungakkai curry which is an easy and delicious curry and it goes well with rice. Drumstick / Murungakkai is a a long thin pod resembling a drum stick and is quite popular in India. In southern part of India, drumsticks are mostly used for preparing sambar ,aviyal etc.

Ingredients

Drumsticks ( cut to about 1 1/2 inch pieces ) ~ 10 nos
Green chillies ~ 4-6 nos
Turmeric powder ~  3/4 tsp
Coriander powder ~ 1 1/2 tsp
Fennel powder / Perinjeerakam podi ~ 1/4 tsp
Grated coconut ~ 1 cup
Shallots / Kochu ulli ~ 3-4 nos
Garlic ~ 2-3 cloves
Tomatoes ~ 2 nos
Onions ~ 1 no
Curry leaves ~ 1 stem
Dry red chillies / Unakka mulaku ~ 2 nos
Mustard seeds / Kadku ~ 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil ~ 2-3 tbsp

Method

  • First heat oil and add mustard seeds and when it splutter, add dry red chillies and curry leaves. Then add chopped onions and saute till onions become soft. Then add chopped tomatoes and fry till tomatoes are nicely mashed and cooked. Then add drumsticks along with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, green chillies ,salt and about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water. Then cook covered for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile grind grated coconut, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, shallots, coriander powder, fennel powder and garlic to a fine paste by adding about 3-4 tbsp of water. Then add ground coconut paste to the cooked drumsticks and keep in a low flame and then remove from the flame after 5 minutes.

Note: You can even split the drumsticks length-wise before cooking.

Enjoy with rice.

Cheers!!

We lived in New Delhi for 5 years and my husband travelled to Kerala, he said it's a gorgeous place and the food delicious! My daughter and I miss India very much, especially its food so I'm following you right away. Your recipes are so tempting! I just stocked up on Indian spices so when we go back home to Sicily I'll have them. In Trapani we don't find Indian spices. Regards from Rome!
