Pazham pori / Ethakka appam

Servings ~ 4-5 adults ( We can make around 25 pazham poris )

Pazham pori / Ethakka appam / Ripe banana fritters is an easy and delicious Kerala style snack made with ripe plantains..

Ingredients

Ethakka / Ripe plantains ~ 3 nos
Maida / All purpose flour ~ 1 1/4 cups
Rice flour ~ 1 tbsp
Sugar ~ 1 tbsp - 1 1/2 tbsp ( Increase or decrease depending upon how ripe  and sweet the plantains are. )
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp ( Turmeric powder gives color to the pazham pori, so add according to your personal preference )
Salt ~ 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam ~ 1/2 tsp ( Optional )
Water ~ 1/2 - 3/4 cup ( Approximately )
Coconut oil ~ as needed

Method

  • First peel the plantain and then cut the plantains horizontally into two halves and then slice them vertically to around 3-4 pieces.
  • Then in a mixing bowl take all purpose flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, sugar and salt and then mix it nicely with your hand by adding enough water to get a thick batter with a dropping consistency and do make sure there are no lumps in the batter.
  • Next heat enough coconut oil in a small deep bottom pan and then dip the plantain slices in the batter one by one and coat it well. Then deep fry it in oil for about 2-3 minutes or till they become light golden color. Then transfer the pazham pori to a paper towel.

Enjoy with your evening tea / coffee.

Cheers!!!!

I love pazham pori as a street food but it is getting risky to eat out. I will try this at home...of course, it is going to hit my waste-line.
