Beans Thoran



Here comes the recipe of Kerala beans thoran / Payaru thoran / Kerala beans stir fry.

Servings ~ 2-3 adults

Ingredients 

Chopped beans ~ around 3 1/2 cups
Grated coconut ~ 1/2 cup
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam ~ 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Red chili powder ~ 1/4 tsp ( Optional )
Green chilies ~ 4 nos ( Chopped )
Onions ~ 1 no ( Finely chopped )
Garlic ~ 2-3 cloves
Dry red chilies ~ 2-3 nos 
Mustard seeds / Kaduku ~ 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves ~ 1 stem
Oil ~ 2-3 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method

  • First wash and slice beans to small pieces and then allow it to drain. Coarsely grind grated coconut, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chilly powder and garlic. 
  • Next heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, when it starts to crackle, add dry red chilies followed by curry leaves. Then add finely chopped onions and green chilies and saute till onions become soft. Add chopped beans along with enough salt and mix it nicely.
  • Then let it cook covered in a low flame for about 5 minutes. Next add ground coconut mixture and press it using a ladle and again cook covered for another 5 minutes. Finally mix thoran nicely and then remove from the flame after 3-4 minutes.
Enjoy with some hot rice.

I have never had beans on their own, always along with potatoes or peas.. Feel that bitter-sweet taste if eaten all alone..

This looks so delicious, I wanted to have a bite and see if I still suffer from the taste consciousness :P
