Nadan Konju Thoran

Today I am sharing the recipe of nadan konju thoran / nadan chemmmeen thoran / kerala style prawns thoran / kerala style shrimp stir fry with coconut. Its an easy to prepare and delicious dish and it goes well with rice...

Serves ~ 2 adults

Ingredients

Prawns / Shrimps / Chemmeen ~ 250 gram - Try to use, small sized shrimps.
Grated coconut ~ 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder ~ 1 tsp
Black pepper powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam ~ 1/4 tsp
Sliced shallots ( Kochu ulli ) ~ 1 1/2 cup - 2 cups
Green chillies ~  4 nos
Garlic ~ 4-5 cloves
Ginger ~ a small piece
Lemon juice ~ 2 tsp
Curry leaves ~ 1 stem
Dry red chillies ( Unakka mulaku ) ~ 2-3 nos
Urad dal ( Uzhunnu ) ~ 1 1/2 tbsp
Mustard seeds ( Kaduku ) ~ 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil ~ 2-3 tbsp

Method

  • First clean the prawns and marinate it with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and little salt and keep it aside for about 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile grind coarsely grated coconut, red chilly powder, black pepper powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and cumin seeds
  • Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and when it pops up, lower the flame and add urad dal and fry till the urad dal turns light brown color. Next add curry leaves and dry red chillies and fry for less than a minute.
  • Then add sliced shallots, chopped green chillies, crushed ginger and garlic and saute till shallots become soft and transparent. Then add prawns/shrimps along with ground coconut mixture and enough salt and cook covered for about 10 minutes in a medium-low flame.
  • After 10 minutes, remove the lid and add lemon juice and cook uncovered for another 5-6 minutes or till the thoran becomes dry and then remove from the flame.

Notes : For this dish, try to use shallots instead of big onions and remember, the more shallots you use, the more tastier the thoran will be. Thats why make sure you use, at least 1 1/2 cups of sliced shallots.

Here I have added lemon juice in the final stage, but you can even use a very small piece of tamarind instead of lemon juice. If you are using tamarind , then grind the tamarind along with the coconut and add that to the thoran.

Enjoy with rice.

Cheers!!!!

JISHA

A very Kerala feeling, sounding recipes. Lovely.
The thoran sounds like the puttu , so much in practice in southern Tamil nadu.

Lovely blog. I would like to view it leisurely and also try some of them out.

Thanks.
