Chemmeen manga charu

Today I am sharing the recipe of Prawn - raw mango curry / Chemmeen manga curry / Konju manga curry.

Serves ~ 2 adults

Ingredients

Prawns / Shrimps ~ 500 grams ( Small sized )
Grated coconut ~ 1/2 cup
Raw mango / pacha manga ~ 1 No ( Medium sized mango )
Shallots / Kochu ulli ~ 6 Nos
Onion ~ 1 No
Green chillies ~ 5 Nos
Crushed ginger and garlic ~ 2 1/2 tbsp
Coriander powder ~ 2 tbsp
Red chilli powder ~ 2 tsp
Turmeric powder ~ 1/2 tsp
Fennel seeds / Perinjeerakam ~ 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds / Uluva  ~ 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds ~ 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves ~ 2 sprigs
Coconut oil ~ 2-3 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method
  • First clean the prawns and rub it with little salt and turmeric and wash it nicely. Then heat 1/2 tsp of oil in a pan and add grated coconut , chopped shallots and fennel seeds and roast it in a medium-low flame till the grated coconut becomes golden brown in color but do keep on stirring otherwise it may get burnt. Then allow the mixture to cool and then grind it to a fine paste by adding 1/4 cup of water.
  • Heat remaining oil in an another pan and add mustard seeds and when it crackles, add fenugreek seeds and curry leaves and fry for about 1 minute. Then add chopped onions, chopped green chillies, crushed ginger and garlic and saute till onions become transparent.
  • Then add red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and fry for less than a minute in low flame and then add 1 cup of water along with mango pieces, prawns and enough salt. Then cook covered for about 10-15 minutes in medium-low flame. Then finally add ground coconut mixture along with enough water and then allow it to boil for another 5 minutes and remove from the flame.
