Kovakka Chemmeen Thoran / Ivy Gourd - Prawn Stir Fry with Coconut


Ingredients

Chopped Kovakka / Ivy Gourd ~ 1 cup
Prawns / Shrimp ~ 25 Nos ( Medium size )
Kodampuli / Gambooge ~ 2-3 pieces
Onion ~ 1 No ( Small )
Grated coconut ~ 1/2 cup
Green chillies ~ 4-5 Nos
Shallots ~ 5 Nos
Chopped ginger and garlic ~1 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder
Dry red chillies ~ 2-3 Nos
Curry leaves ~ 3-4 leaves
Mustard seeds
Oil
Salt to taste


Method 

  • Wash and chop the Ivy Gourd (Kovakka ) into 4 pieces.
  • Wash the prawns and keep it aside.Soak Kodampuli in water.
  • Then cook the prawns for just 5 minutes by adding 3 pinch turmeric powder and little salt. (No need of adding water).
  • Grind coarsely grated coconut, green chillies, shallots, chopped ginger and garlic & 1/2 tsp turmeric powder.
  • Heat oil in a pan , add mustard seeds. When it crackles, add dry red chillies and curry leaves. Then add chopped Ivy Gourd and chopped onions. And saute it for about 4-5 minutes. Then add half cooked prawns, Kudampuli,salt and ground coconut mixture and mix it well. Then cook it covered in low flame till its done. It will take about 15 minutes.
  • When its almost done, cook uncovered for some more minutes and remove from the flame. 

Have with Rice.
