Chammanthy (Coconut chutney) / Chammanthi

Dosa & chammanthy are one of the popular breakfast items in Kerala. We can even have dosa with Sambar but the good thing about chammanthi is that its very delicious and very easy to prepare also.

Ingredients

Grated Coconut ~ 1 Cup
Shallots (Kochu ulli)  ~ 3-4 Nos
Red Chilly powder ~ 1 tsp
Tamarind paste ~ 1/4 tsp (NB: You can even use a small piece of mango instead of tamarind.
Green chilly ~ 3-4 nos
Ginger Paste ~ 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds
Curry leaves ~ 4-5 leaves
Dry red chillies ~ 3 Nos
Oil ~ 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method
  • First roast the chilly powder in a pan without adding oil in low flame for less than 1 minute and this will help in removing the raw taste of chilly powder.

  • Then grind grated coconut, shallots, tamarind paste, Green chilly, Ginger paste and roasted red chilli powder and salt to a paste by adding little water.

  • Next heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds and when it start to crackle add dry red chillies and curry leaves and fry for sometime. Then add the ground coconut paste and mix it well. You can add water at this stage depending on the consistency you prefer.

  • After 2-3 minutes remove from flame. (NB: We should remove it from the flame, before it starts boiling.
Enjoy with Dosa/ Idly

Cheers!!
